Odisha's Aviation Sector Set for Takeoff: 14 Airstrips Await Bidding Under Udan Scheme
In a significant boost to Odisha's aviation infrastructure, the state has identified 14 airstrips for development under the Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (Udan) scheme. These airstrips are now awaiting bidding, paving the way for enhanced connectivity and economic growth in the region.
The six airports that have already been restored and developed under the Udan scheme include Amarda, Jaipur, Jharsuguda, Rangeilunda, Rourkela, and Utkela. After the successful restoration, domestic flights have commenced from Jharsuguda, Jaipur, and Rourkela, catering to the increasing demand for air travel in these areas.
The Udan scheme, initiated by the government to promote regional air connectivity, has played a crucial role in reviving and expanding air transport to underserved and unserved regions of the country. The development of these 14 additional airstrips is expected to further improve accessibility and boost tourism and business prospects in Odisha.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, General VK Singh (retired), shared this information in response to a written question from BJM MP Mamata Mahant during the Rajya Sabha session today. General Singh emphasized the government's commitment to expanding aviation infrastructure and enhancing air travel accessibility across the nation.
The unserved airstrips awaiting bidding in the Udan scheme are located in Angul, Lladbil, Virasal, Gudari, Hirakund, Jaikpur, Langigarh, Nawapada, Padmpur, Rairangpur, Raisuan, Sukinda, Therubali, and Tusra. Once developed and restored under the scheme, these airstrips will open up new avenues for growth and development in these regions, providing better connectivity and opportunities to the local population.
The Udan scheme not only benefits the passengers but also promotes regional airlines and drives economic development by attracting investments and boosting tourism. It encourages airlines to operate on underserved routes by providing various incentives such as Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to reduce the cost burden and ensure the affordability of air travel for the common citizens.
With the bidding process now underway, aviation authorities are optimistic about attracting reputed airlines to operate flights on these routes. The increased air connectivity is expected to bring in more tourists, promote trade, and create job opportunities in the region.
As Odisha's aviation sector gears up for a new era of growth and connectivity, the Udan scheme stands as a testament to the government's commitment to developing a well-connected and prosperous nation. As the bidding process progresses, all eyes are on the skies, eagerly awaiting the expansion of Odisha's aviation horizon.
