Centre Unhappy With Popular Streaming Players Airing Obscenity & Violence
New Delhi, July 15: Popular streaming players like Amazon, Disney, and Netflix have been suggested by the government to undergo independent reviews of their content to assess for obscenity and violence before being made available to the public.
However, according to sources cited by news agency Reuters, these platforms rejected the suggestion during a meeting held on June 20 at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Nevertheless, some officials present at the meeting proposed an alternative solution such as the formation of an expert committee responsible for setting age ratings. This idea was disclosed by one of the attendees, as reported by Reuters.
The government emphasized the importance of adopting a "more proactive approach" to ensure that streaming content, including international content, complies with a designated code of ethics. The minutes from the meeting revealed that the code already requires providers to exercise caution when it comes to content that may incite violence or be sensitive due to religious reasons.
The meeting was attended by officials from Amazon, Disney, Netflix, Reliance's broadcast unit, Viacom18, and Apple TV.
