Mumbai, Aug 25: Mumbai has reported the first case of Zika virus, as an elderly 79-year-old man tested positive for the virus near Chembur. The man, who fell victim to the virus, exhibited symptoms including fever, runny nose, and cough from July 19 onwards. Fortunately, prompt medical intervention led to his recovery, enabling his discharge from medical care, said media reports.

The local municipal corporation, BMC, conducted comprehensive testing on individuals who had come into contact with the patient. Fortunately, these efforts yielded no further instances of the Zika virus within this particular cluster.

The Zika virus, typically transmitted through mosquito bites, was initially identified in the Zika Forest of Uganda back in 1947. Although it remained relatively non-lethal for years, a notable outbreak in 2015, notably in Brazil, brought it to global attention.

Zika virus symptoms tend to be mild, with some individuals experiencing no symptoms at all. Common indicators encompass fever, rashes, joint and muscle discomfort, headaches, and red eyes. Typically, these symptoms manifest within a week following infection and endure for several days to a week.

While Zika virus infection usually presents mild symptoms, its repercussions for pregnant women and their unborn children are more severe. Infection during pregnancy heightens the risk of congenital malformations such as microcephaly and other neurological disorders in the offspring.

To mitigate the risk of Zika virus infection, individuals are advised to employ measures such as mosquito repellent, long-sleeved clothing, and frequenting air-conditioned or well-lit spaces. Vigilant blood tests and screenings also play a pivotal role in averting infection.

Presently, no targeted antiviral treatments exist for Zika virus infection. Medical professionals prescribe rest, adequate hydration, and close monitoring of infected pregnant women to promptly detect and address potential birth defects.
