Real Intention Behind Opposition-Sponsored No-Confidence Motion Against Modi Govt; Know Here
New Delhi, July 26: In a major development, the Opposition parties' move to bring a no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha against the BJP-led Government was accepted by Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday even as the lock jam over the Manipur issue continued to disrupt businesses in both the Houses of Parliament.
The motion was moved by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and was allowed after a headcount of 50 MPs as required under the Parliamentary rules.
According to the political observers, the move is intended at cornering the government on the law-and-order situation in Manipur and make Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak in Manipur.
No-confidence implies a complete loss of trust in the treasury benches, the governance of the day and thus defeating the Government on the floor of Lok Sabha through the opposition unity. But BJP is under no such threat as it enjoys an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha. BJP alone has 301 members in the House, well above the halfway mark of 272. Even if all the political parties, considered close to BJP but not in NDA, support the no-confidence, the BJP will still sail through.
The latest strategy by the opposition is seen more as a ‘battle of perception’ than bringing the government down, said a media report. The opposition is aware of the government's strength but finds the no-confidence motion as a cleaver strategy to expose the government on the Manipur issue, media reports added.
Though the government had insisted that Home Minister Amit Shah will speak on the issue in both Houses, the opposition parties have insisted on the PM speaking on the issue.
