New Delhi, July 13: Driving a Tesla has been a declared urge for many car enthusiasts in India, a dream which could become a reality soon. Elon Musk is reported to have reached out to the Narendra Modi government, weeks after meeting him in New York, to set up his manufacturing plant in the country.

According to a report in the Times of India, the manufacturing unit will have the capacity to produce 5 lakh electric vehicles annually. The price of the base model could start from Rs 20 lakh onwards.

Sources in the government have told TOI that Tesla has placed an ambitious plan which includes exports to the Asia Pacific region from India. The discussions are being led by the Ministry of Commerce with the hope that the engagement will come out with a good proposal that is beneficial to all the stakeholders in the industry.

The TOI report said that a team from the company had visited India in May to initiate the discussion over a proposal to invest in India. The company already has a large manufacturing base in China. If the India plan sails through, the development could demonstrate India’s steadfast commitment to the Make in India initiative.

The advent of Tesla cars will also herald a new chapter for the automobile sector in India, especially in the fledgling EV space. India has become the fourth largest car market in the world, selling close to 40 lakh cars during the last financial year.
