Heavy Rains Trigger Flood Alert in Six Districts of State
The state is bracing for possible floods as heavy rains continue to lash several regions, causing concern for residents and authorities. As of Thursday evening, the water levels in major rivers have risen, prompting authorities to issue alerts and take precautionary measures. The Water Resources Department has reported that 4.72 lakh cusecs of water are flowing in Khairmal, 7.86 lakh cusecs in Barmul, and 9.18 lakh cusecs in Mundali. Although the water levels are receding in Khairmal and Barmul, Mundali is witnessing steady water flow, raising concerns for the next 24 hours.
As a result, six districts, namely Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, and Jajpur, have been put on high alert. The authorities have warned that if the rainfall intensifies, these districts could face moderate floods. Baitarani and Brahmani rivers are closely monitored as their water levels are approaching the danger mark. However, the current receding water levels have eased immediate fears.
In Achupada, the water level of Baitarani River is at 19.44 meters, surpassing the danger mark of 17.83 meters. Similarly, Jenapur is closely watching Brahmani River, which is currently at 22.20 meters, close to the danger level of 23 meters. To address the emergency, the State Revenue Commissioner, Satyabrat Sahu, has ordered the district authorities to evacuate people from flood-affected areas and provide essential relief materials. The safety and well-being of residents in these districts are of utmost priority.
The Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, Bhakti Ranjan Mohanty, has stated that the maximum water flow is now recorded in the Mundali River. However, there is hope that the floods will recede by Friday afternoon. Authorities are urging residents in the affected regions to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions. Evacuation plans and relief efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of the floods and ensure the safety of everyone in the affected areas.
