BMC Convenes Special Meeting to Tackle Dengue Situation in Capital
Bhubaneswar, July 6: In a significant move to prevent the spread of dengue and enhance sanitation measures, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) convened a special meeting today at the Ekamra Hall under the guidance of BMC Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange. The meeting saw the participation of key officials, including the Mayor, deputy mayor, corporators, and representatives from various agencies.
Kulange emphasized the urgent need to combat mosquito breeding by directing strict measures. Stagnant water sources were to be identified and promptly treated with fogging, while grass and bushes were to be regularly trimmed. Additionally, areas suitable for oil spraying were to be identified, and efforts were to be made to quickly pinpoint dengue hotspot areas.
Recognizing the importance of community engagement, the Commissioner stressed the need for citizen awareness and mass cleaning initiatives. To this end, the BMC will launch an extensive awareness campaign in schools. Every BMC staff member will visit schools to educate children on dengue prevention, waste segregation and utilization, and maintaining cleanliness within a 5-meter radius of their homes or organizations.
Moreover, the Commissioner urged the City Health Society to initiate this program without delay, collaborating with community groups to ensure widespread awareness among school students. The Mayor, deputy mayor, corporators, Commissioner, other BMC officials, ward officers, doctors, sanitary inspectors, and workers will actively participate in the awareness sessions, visiting schools to address students directly.
Preventing mosquito breeding is a top priority, and all feasible ideas and plans will be implemented. Fogging operations will be conducted meticulously, leaving no sensitive areas unattended. In extreme cases, the use of mosquito larvae-eating fish will be considered.
Furthermore, as the rainy season has commenced, the BMC directed all relevant agencies to prioritize the thorough cleaning of drains and removal of mud. Sanitary inspectors and ward officers were instructed to provide real-time updates, including photographic evidence, to monitor the progress. Strict actions will be taken against agencies failing to fulfill their responsibilities.
To enhance citizen participation, the BMC highlighted multiple grievance redressal channels, including the SAFA App, BMC website, 1929 city call center, and social media platforms. The Commissioner mandated prompt resolution of all grievances in adherence to the citizens' needs and expectations.
The meeting concluded with a strong commitment from all attendees to implement the outlined strategies effectively. BMC Commissioner Kulange expressed confidence in the collaborative efforts of the BMC, agencies, and citizens, emphasizing the collective responsibility to safeguard public health and promote cleanliness.
