A recent study conducted on a significant population of 21,000 people has unveiled the potential of vitamin D supplements in warding off heart attacks among the elderly.

This randomized controlled trial took place over a six-year period from 2014 to 2020, focusing on individuals aged 60 to 84.

Each participant received a monthly vitamin D supplement, and the results were remarkably encouraging, dispelling the belief that vitamin D does not decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The findings from this study have been published in the esteemed medical journal BMJ.

Although these findings are promising, the authors of the study emphasized the need for further trials to solidify the evidence.

Heart disease remains a significant challenge for the healthcare sector in India, where nearly 25,000 deaths are attributed to heart attacks each year. It is worth noting that individuals in the age range of 45 to 60 years are more susceptible to cardiovascular disease.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in the absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. Moreover, it aids in reducing inflammation, promoting cell growth, and supporting neuromuscular and immune function, as well as glucose metabolism.

People who engage in outdoor physical activities and consume nutrient-rich foods are more likely to maintain adequate levels of vitamin D compared to those who do not. Previous studies have suggested that once individuals achieve sufficient vitamin D levels, the benefits in relation to heart health reach a plateau, indicating that higher intake does not further reduce the risk of heart disease.
