Unidentified Bodies from Bahanga Train Accident Await Decision as 2 Months Pass

Two months after the tragic train accident in Bahanga, Balasore district, on June 2, the 29 bodies of the deceased are yet to be identified, leaving families in anguish as they await closure. The collision between Shalimar-Chennai Karmandal Express and SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast with a goods train claimed the lives of 294 passengers and left 1175 others injured. AIIMS Superintendent in Bhubaneswar has revealed that the bodies of 133 victims have been handed over to their families in a painstaking identification process. In the first phase, 81 bodies were released, and subsequently, 52 more bodies have been returned to their respective families. However, the fate of the remaining 29 bodies still hangs in the balance.

The government has yet to decide on the course of action for these unclaimed bodies. As the families of the deceased anxiously wait for closure, authorities are facing a challenging task in determining the identities of the remaining victims. The incident has raised concerns about the need for improved safety measures and emergency response protocols in the railway sector to prevent such tragic accidents in the future. Authorities are urging anyone with information about their missing loved ones to come forward and assist in the identification process. Until a decision is made by the government, the bodies will continue to be housed at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. The nation stands in solidarity with the affected families during this difficult time, hoping for a swift resolution to the identification process and closure for those who lost their loved ones in the tragic train accident.
