Bhubaneswar, July 10: Rain continues to play truant with Odisha even as a vast swatch of north India is reeling under a flood-like situation.

Information obtained from the Indian Meteorological Department reveals that more than 15  of Odisha have registered deficient rainfall between the 1st of July to the 10th of July, with the deficit from 21 per cent to 69 per cent. The rainfall deficit in Puri district was recorded at 69 per cent, raising alarm bells in various quarters.

There were five districts including Puri where the rainfall deficit was above 62 per cent. They are Angul, Balangir, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur.

Jharsuguda was the only district where the rainfall deficit was recorded as just one per cent during the last 10-day period, IMD figures said. In the Khurda district, the deficit recorded was as high as 54 per cent.

The Met department, however, has forecast rain in the coming days. In a bulletin issued on Monday afternoon, it predicted isolated heavy rainfall over Odisha in the next five days along with other places in the country.

The poor precipitation over Odisha comes even as large parts of north India are witnessing unusually high rainfall since the weekend. Life has been thrown out of gear in states such as Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi while many rivers are in spate.

Reports coming from these states said 19 lives have been lost in the torrential rain and heavy damage to properties.
