PhD No More Mandatory to Apply For Assistant Professor Post; UGC
New Delhi, July 6: In a reprieve for aspiring college and university teachers, UGC has made it clear that a Ph.D. qualification would no more be mandatory for appointment as assistant professor.
The announcement was made by UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar on his Twitter handle following the publication of a gazatte notification. He said that the decision will come into effect from July 1 this year.
As per the notification, National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET), and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) will now serve as the minimum criteria for direct recruitment to the position of assistant professor in all higher education institutions.
The Gazette Notification issued on 30th June, said that amendments have been made to the 'University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations, 2018.'
The revised regulations will now be known as the 'University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) (2nd Amendment) Regulations, 2023.'
