Ex-TMC Leader Gifts Wife AK-47 On 1st Marriage Anniversary; Courts Controversy
Kolkata, Aug 30: Riazul Haque, a former leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has courted controversy after he presented an AK-47 rifle as a gift to his wife on their first wedding anniversary.
The situation escalated when Riazul took to social media on Monday to share an image of his wife, Sabina Yasmin, holding the AK-47 firearm. Subsequently, Riazul deleted the post following criticism from local BJP leaders and CPIM, accusing him of "promoting Taliban rule."
Riazul, however, asserted that the firearm his wife was holding was, in fact, a "toy gun." He stated, "There was no illegal activity involved, as my wife was holding a toy gun. The allegations against me are baseless, as the gun in question was a fake."
Local sources indicated that Riazul had previously held the position of president in the Rampurhat-1 block of the Trinamool's minority cell. However, he resigned from this role a couple of months ago.
Meanwhile, the BJP called for an investigation into the source of the firearm provided to Riazul. The CPIM has also demanded immediate intervention by the state administration.
