UK-Based SRAM & MRAM Group Likely To Set Up Semi-Conductor Plant At Ganjam Dist

Bhubaneswar, July 1: The UK-based SRAM & MRAM Group, which signed an MoU with the Odisha Government in March this year to set up a semiconductor fabrication unit in the State, has zeroed on a site near Chhatrapur in Ganjam district for establishing the plant.

The project entails an investment of Rs 30,000 in the initial phase, with plans to infuse Rs 2 lakh crore for the entire project that is set to change not only the industrial climate of Odisha but bring a dramatic transformation in the socio-economic profile of South Odisha.

After visiting some sites near Chhatrapur in the district, its Indian company officials headed by its chairman Guruji Kumaran Swami held a meeting with the district administration at Chhatrapur on Thursday, news agency PTI said.

"We have visited some sites, including the industrial park of Tata and some private lands for the establishment of the proposed semiconductor unit. A technical team of the company will visit the district to finalise the site," said Debadutt Singhdeo, project director of the firm was quoted by the news agency as saying.

The site near Chhatrapur offered all the favourable options for the setting up of the fabrication unit such as an abundant supply of clean water and energy, a dedicated industrial corridor, Gopalpur port in close proximity and quick access to the national highway, Singhdeo said.

The company plans to employ 5000 people in the initial phase and make a substantial contribution to the chip requirement in India. The semiconductor chip has become the primary product for almost all sectors, asides from the technological-driven industry. An estimate suggests that India imports semiconductor chips worth Rs 3 lakh crore every year.
