Monsoon Arrives In Kerala; Onset In Odisha To Be Delayed
New Delhi, June 8: The South West Monsoon has reached Kerala, almost a week after the normal onset date. The news of the arrival brought relief to the farmers and kindled hope for rapid advancement into the rest of the country, reeling under one of the harshest summers in recent times.
The monsoon's onset in Odisha is likely to be delayed beyond its normal onset period between June 10-12.
The monsoon rain in Kerala was also greeted with enthusiasm by the policy makers and economists as it is critical for the country’s irrigation-starved agriculture sector. Monsoon rain delivers 70 per cent of India’s water requirement and recharges the dams and reservoirs.
"Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala today, the 8th June 2023, against the normal date of 1st June," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement.
It said that the monsoon has advanced into the south Tamil Nadu, entire Lakshadweep. Conditions are favourable for further advance of the Southwest monsoon into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, some parts of Karnataka and some more parts of southwest, Central and northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of northeastern states during next 48 hours.
