Siliguri, June 11: Mangoes, the favourites among the young and old, do come at a price. After all, they are not so aam if you are a lover of the Miyazaki variety.
As per news reports, a kg of this variety at the ongoing Siliguri mango festival is selling for a whopping Rs 2.75 lakh, making it the most expensive mango in the world. News agency ANI said the variety is the most talked about variety in the festival and people are curious to know what makes it special to command a premium.
Studies suggest that each piece of Miyazaki mango weighs around 350 g and contains 15 per cent higher sugar content. It traces its root to Miyazaki city in Japan, thus the name, and requires abundant sunshine and rainfall. The tropical climate, therefore, favours the cultivation of this mango. Some farmers in West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh are already testing success with its production.
“I received a positive response with the huge production. It can be grown in any part of the state and change the economic condition of the farmers, said Shoukat Hussein, a farmer from West Bengal’s Birbhum district. Hussian got the saplings from Bangladesh and produced them in his garden.
It is also known as ‘Red Sun’ and in Bengali ‘Surja Dim’ (Red egg). It is popular for its nutrients, taste, colour and sugar content.
