BMC Mayor Felicitates Centenarian & Eminent Headmaster on Teacher's Day

Bhubaneswar; September 5 : On the occasion of Teacher's Day today, Mayor Sulochana Das, of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), honoured 100-year-old eminent teacher Bhaskar Chandra Dash.

At about 3:30 pm, Mayor went to the residence of  Dash, at Budheshawari Colony, Bhubaneswar and presented him the bouquet and shawl. On the auspicious moment, Mayor said "this an opportunity today to honour a living legend like Dash, who contributed a lot to the field of English teaching. We feel blessed and proud to meet and honour him". Local Corporator Ashish Kumar Patnaik was present on this occasion.

Dash graduated from the then Ravenshaw College in 1947, securing first class with distinction in English Honours. Coming out of a poor family could not go for higher education and he chosen teaching as his career.

Dash, who wrote several English grammar and translation books for the Board of Higher Secondary Education, was selected by the Government of India to go to Iraq from 1960-62 to train the teachers there about English teaching.

After returning from there, he joined Agarpada High School following the instruction of Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab. Later, he served as the headmaster of Vanivihar High School for a long time and made the institution proud by producing outstanding students. In 1977, he received the President's Award for his contributions for teaching and retired in 1986.

Associated with daily newspaper The Samaja’s welfare wing, Dash had contributed to the health initiatives of the organisation. Born in Mal Biharpur, Cuttack, district, he went to Ravenshaw College after passing his matriculation from Banki High School. Many of his students have achieved high positions in India and abroad. This morning, the students of the 1955 batch from Bahugram wished him a long and healthy life with Gurupuja.

Tears rolled out from the eyes of Parvati Dash, wife of Dash when Mayor arrived at their home and honoured the living legend. During his old days he is now being looked after by his three daughters and son-in-laws.

"Such an exemplary personality is an all-time guide for every teacher, and those who are new in the teaching profession must follow in in the footsteps of such an outstanding Guru," expressed Mayor.
