Bhubaneswar, May 22: A man accused of duping job seekers by promising lucrative placements in international airlines like British Airways and Lufthansa has finally been arrested after years on the run. The Odisha Crime Branch apprehended Bishnu Prasad Pattanaik, alias Biranchi Narayan Pattanaik, from Bhubaneswar on May 21.

Pattanaik had allegedly defrauded multiple aspirants of lakhs of rupees by offering fake job letters in top global airlines and consultancy firms. According to officials, he had been under CID-Crime Branch surveillance since 2018 in connection with two major cheating cases filed at Gunupur police station.

In one case, he swindled Rs 90 lakh from an aeronautical engineer from Coimbatore, luring him with false promises of a job first at British Airways and then at Lufthansa. In another, he took Rs 15 lakh from a woman in Rayagada after claiming he could secure her son a high-paying engineering job abroad.

Pattanaik’s tactics involved assuming fake identities — including those of a doctor, professor, and engineer — to win the confidence of his victims. He forged documents like passports and driving licenses, and even created counterfeit job offers bearing names of prestigious firms such as Lufthansa Technik and HR Maxons.

His arrest was made possible through a coordinated operation led by Inspector Rajkishore Behera of the CID-Crime Branch, following human and technical surveillance. Pattanaik was booked under multiple sections of the IPC, including cheating, forgery, and criminal intimidation, and produced before the SDJM Court in Gunupur.
