Govt Set To Bring New AC Usage Policy; Restrict Temp between 20-28 degrees
New Delhi, June 10: In a groundbreaking move to promote energy conservation and sustainability, Union Minister of Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, announced on Tuesday that India will soon implement a new air conditioning (AC) temperature standardization policy. The initiative, described as a “first-of-its-kind experiment,” will restrict AC units to operate within a temperature range of 20°C to 28°C, preventing cooling below 20°C or heating above 28°C.
Speaking to media, Khattar emphasised the policy’s dual aim of reducing energy consumption and fostering environmentally responsible practices. “This is a significant step toward standardizing temperature settings for air conditioners across the country,” he said. “By setting this range, we are encouraging energy efficiency while ensuring comfort for users.”
The announcement comes as India grapples with soaring energy demands, particularly during peak summer months when AC usage spikes.
According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), air conditioners account for nearly 30 per cent of household electricity consumption in urban areas during summer. The new policy aligns with India’s broader commitment to combat climate change and achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2070, as pledged under the Paris Agreement.
The temperature standardization will apply to both residential and commercial AC units, with the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs working closely with manufacturers to enforce compliance.
While exact implementation details are yet to be finalized, Khattar hinted that the policy could involve firmware updates for new AC models and regulatory guidelines for older units. The ministry is also exploring awareness campaigns to educate consumers about the benefits of the restricted temperature range.
