CBSE to Conduct Class X Board Exams Twice a Year from 2026

New Delhi, June 25: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved a new policy to conduct Class X board examinations twice annually starting from the 2026 academic year, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The decision aims to reduce academic stress and provide students with more opportunities to improve their scores.

According to CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, the first phase of the exams will be mandatory and held in February, with results announced in April.

The second phase, scheduled for May with results in June, will be optional for students seeking to enhance their performance in up to three subjects, including Science, Mathematics, Social Science, or two languages. The higher score from the two attempts will be considered for the final certification.

The policy, finalized after public feedback on a draft released in February 2025, has received mixed reactions. While students and parents welcome the flexibility, some educators express concerns about increased workload and logistical challenges.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized that the move will create an stress-free learning environment, supported by a robust education system capable of implementing the reform.

CBSE will conduct practical and internal assessments once annually, and no special examinations will be held.

Approximately 26.6 lakh Class X students are expected to benefit from this initiative.
