NCERT Granted Deemed University Status, To Offer Own Degrees

New Delhi, Sept 1: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been granted the status of deemed university, said Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The announcement was made on Friday at an event to mark the 63rd foundation day of NCERT.

With the deemed university status, NCERT will be able to offer its own graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees. It will also have the autonomy to introduce new programs, develop its own curriculum, and conduct examinations.

Mr. Pradhan said that the decision to grant deemed university status to NCERT was a “historic moment” for the education sector. He said that it would help NCERT to “play a more proactive role in the development of school education in India.”

What does the deemed university status mean for NCERT: 

• The deemed university status is granted by the Central government on the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
• Institutions that are granted deemed university status enjoy the academic status and privileges of a university.
• This includes the right to award degrees, conduct research, and offer postgraduate and doctoral programs.
• The deemed university status is a significant boost for NCERT, as it will allow it to play a more proactive role in the development of school education in India.
