A Gift of Life: KIMS Pays Tribute as Brain-Dead Youth’s Kidneys Give Hope to Two Patients

Bhubaneswar, June 9: In an inspiring act of courage and compassion, the family of a 28-year-old unmarried man from Angul, who was declared brain dead after a tragic road accident, chose to donate his kidneys—giving two patients a fresh chance at life.

The young man had met with an accident in Angul on May 30. He was immediately rushed to KIMS where, despite the best efforts of doctors, he was declared brain dead.

As per protocol, the hospital authorities reached out to his grieving family, including his parents and married sister, to discuss the possibility of organ donation. His mother, distraught and overwhelmed with the sudden loss, was initially hesitant. But after extensive counselling by the transplant coordination team, the family made a courageous decision—to honour their son’s memory by giving the gift of life to others.

On Sunday, a team of surgeons at KIMS successfully retrieved both kidneys. One was transplanted into a patient at KIMS, while the other was transported to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where another life-saving transplant was performed.

In a solemn tribute on Monday morning, the hospital administration at KIMS paid floral respects to the deceased donor, acknowledging the profound impact of the family’s selfless decision.
