Odia Film ‘Bou Buttu Bhuta’ Becomes India’s Most Profitable Blockbuster of 2025

Bhubaneswar, July 8: In an unprecedented triumph for Odia cinema, the horror-comedy Bou Buttu Bhuta has emerged as the most profitable Indian film of 2025, rewriting box office history and putting Odisha’s film industry on the national map.

Directed by Jagdish Mishra and starring Babushaan Mohanty, Archita Sahu, and Aparajita Mohanty, the film has achieved a staggering 403.33% return on investment (ROI), surpassing major Bollywood and South Indian releases, including Chhaava.

Released on June 12, 2025, during the Raja festival, Bou Buttu Bhuta captivated audiences with its unique blend of rural folklore, supernatural thrills, and humor. Made on a modest budget of approximately ₹2-3 crore, the film has grossed ₹17.81 crore in India alone, with a net collection of ₹15.10 crore as of its 25th day. Its worldwide gross stands at an impressive ₹14.5 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.

The film’s remarkable journey began with a modest opening day collection of ₹40 lakh, but phenomenal word-of-mouth propelled it to ₹6.05 crore net in its first week and ₹12.34 crore by day 18. By day 25, it had crossed the ₹15 crore net mark, a milestone no Odia film had ever achieved. This feat not only made Bou Buttu Bhuta the highest-grossing Odia film of all time, surpassing Babushaan Mohanty’s 2022 drama Daman (₹7.50 crore), but also positioned it as a contender against pan-Indian giants like Jawan (₹14.75 crore gross in Odisha) and Pushpa 2 (₹22 crore gross in Odisha).

“Breaking and shattering records like a boss,” Babushaan Mohanty posted on X, thanking Odisha’s audience for their unconditional love.

The film’s profitability stems from its low production cost and extraordinary box office longevity. Despite competition from Bollywood releases like Sitaare Zameen Par and Housefull 5, it maintained a rock-steady hold, with daily collections often surpassing its opening day even in its third week.
